Anemia happens when there is no enough RBC in the blood.
It is very common in patient with CKD and its frequency and severity increases with the severity(stage) of the CKD.
Anemia causes many symptoms including fatigue, loss of stamina, shortness of breath and dizziness.These symtoms are associated with the decreased delivery of oxygen to different organs.
👉Chance of getting anemia in different Stages of CKD:
-Stage 2 -6%
-Stage 3 -15%
-Stage 4 -50%
-Stage 5(ESRD )-90%
📌Major Causes of Anemia in CKD
1=Iron deficiency
2-EPO defiency
📝Treatment
Depend on the severity of the anemia
1-Iron tablets (Ferrous sulfate…)
2-IV iron (iron sucrose..)
3-Epoetin
4-Blood transfusion (use cautiously because there is risk of sensitization in patients awaiting for renal transplant )
👉If the anemia didn’t improve despite the above efforts, you have to think of other causes like vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiencies.
